Preoperative preparation is essential for successful dental surgery and an improved healing process. To improve your oral health and ensure a smooth, complication-free recovery, consider the following carefully thought-out tips.
Stay healthy to give your treatment the best chance of healing and lasting success!
- Descaling
Before any treatment, it’s essential to ensure that teeth are perfectly clean. Scaling just before surgery removes plaque and tartar, reducing the risk of infection and facilitating healing. Schedule your scaling as close as possible to the date of surgery for optimal results.
- Health
Your general state of health is essential to the success of your surgery. We strongly advise you to have a complete physical examination well in advance of your surgery. This will enable us to detect and treat any underlying conditions that may impede the healing process. Improving your lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise and sufficient sleep will strengthen your immune system and prepare your body for optimal healing.
- Zero deficiencies
Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in vital nutrients such as vitamins C, D, E and magnesium, can have a profound impact on your ability to heal. Make sure you eat a balanced diet to avoid deficiencies that could hinder, delay or even halt healing.
- Tobacco and alcohol
We strongly advise against smoking and drinking alcohol before and after your dental procedure. These substances considerably disrupt the healing process, so much so that we cannot guarantee the success of the operation in smokers. Smoking cessation, including the use of nicotine patches, is strongly recommended, ideally starting two months before surgery and continuing for three months after surgery. Maximize your chances of a complication-free recovery!
Before surgery: focus on your lifestyle!
Anticipate the post-operative period with rest, healthy food, medication and supplements. Buy your medications BEFORE surgery, as well as easy-to-eat foods and your freezer gel pack.
- Get a good night’s sleep, arrive rested and fit, and don’t hesitate to take an ATARAX the night before, for example!
- Be sure to follow your pre-operative prescription, especially regarding antibiotics.
- Don’t hesitate to take note of any questions you might have and ask us before the day of your appointment!
- Anticipate the after-effects at both personal and professional level: reactions vary from one patient to another, and while post-op edema is generally moderate and lasts less than 5 days, it can, particularly in the case of large bone grafts, be very marked and last longer. Rest assured, you will always return to normal, and pain is never proportional to the importance of the procedure.
ORAL SURGERY CAN BE TIRING TO A GREATER OR LESSER EXTENT, SO ARRIVE IN GOOD SHAPE! NEVER UNDERGO SURGERY BEFORE AN IMPORTANT EVENT OR A TRIP, AS THERE IS ALWAYS A 2-5% RISK OF COMPLICATION OR FAILURE.
The day of surgery
- Eat normally. Do not come on an empty stomach
- Brush teeth, gums and tongue thoroughly.
- Shaven face, no make-up€.
- COME RELAXED, ZEN, We’re here to take care of you! Don’t hesitate to take an anti-anxiety medication an hour beforehand. You must walk after surgery, but limit your efforts immediately afterwards.
